John C. Knapp, Ph.D.

John Knapp is an internationally known consultant, speaker, and author with leadership experience spanning the education, business, and non-profit sectors. He served as a college president for 11 years, most recently at Washington & Jefferson College where he led innovative initiatives to enhance the student experience and strengthen competitiveness in the market. Under his leadership in 2023-24, the college received record philanthropic support and recruited the largest new class in its 243-year history.

Previously, he designed and directed academic programs in ethical leadership at several universities and worked with corporate leaders to found a non-profit, independent executive-education center helping hundreds of businesses and professional firms address ethical challenges and sustain values-based cultures. For more than a decade, he served as president of a firm providing services in executive communication and crisis management to leading corporate, professional, and academic clients.

  • Higher Education Leadership

His service to higher education also has included founding and directing academic centers focusing on ethics and leadership at Samford University and Georgia State University, as well as creating an independent executive education institute serving hundreds of businesses and professional firms in the Southeastern U.S. Since 2004 he has convened and led the annual Oxford Conclave on Global Higher Education, a retreat for college and university presidents held at the University of Oxford, UK. He served for two years as chair of The New York Times President's Council, an advisory panel on higher education issues.
